Klondike Derby Kit Lists
What you need to Be Prepared for a Klondike Derby
Kit List — Patrol
- Sled with:
- Harness for each Scout (except musher).
- Brake rope for musher.
- 2 ropes 15 m long to assist in up-hill, down-hill, and side-hill manoeuvres.
- Ropes for securing the load to the sled.
- Tarp to wrap sled contents; also handy to sit on at lunch.
- Small shovel.
- In an accessible pack:
- Mid morning snack: trail mix and hot drink in a thermos.
- Mug for every Scout (a big handle helps when drinking with mitts on).
- First aid kit.
- Extra triangular bandages and splints (for first aid event; don't open first aid kit for this).
- Garbage bag.
- Small roll of duct tape.
- Packed for lunch:
- Pot.
- Stove with full fuel tank.
- Water (in insulated jug).
- Powder for making hot chocolate or hot cider. Refill thermos at lunch for afternoon.
Kit List — Scouts
- Taken on the Derby:
- Warm clothing worn:
- Long underwear or other warm layers covering entire body.
- Sweater or fleece.
- Winter coat.
- Snow pants.
- Winter hat.
- Neck gaiter or scarf.
- Mitts (not gloves worn).
- Gloves (in jacket pocket for knots etc.).
- Insulated winter boots. Boots must keep the snow out by having right tops, by wearing gaiters, or sealing with duct tape. Duct tape needs to be applied at room temperature. (No rubber boots or running shoes.)
- BP kit (first aid/survival kit; includes items like matches, compass, etc.).
- In pack on sled:
- Plastic bread bag (to put in boots if they leak).
- Extra socks.
- Extra mitts.
- Lunch: Boil-in-a-bag recommended (not frozen as it takes time to thaw).
- Eating utensils and bowl.
- Warm clothing worn:
- Packed separately and kept in a car until the banquet:
- Shoes to wear inside (floors will be wet).
- Complete change of clothes including:
- Blue pants.
- Scout shirt.
- Necker and woggle.
- Badge sash.
Kit List — Scouters
- Everything the Scouts need.
- Plate, cup, and eating utensils for lunch (lunch is normally provided for Scouters).
- Materials for your event.
- Registration and medical forms.
